Characters/Actors
The majority of characters in rock music videos are creepy and queer models. Exaggerating emotions, especially aggressive ones, is very common. The overall feeling of a character portrayed in music is either cruel or grieving. The main purpose of the character is to represent the violence, harsh emotions, and energy presented in the music. This image could be presented through behavior, such as screaming, through costumes, like grunge and rags, and through intensive playing on instruments. As a genre, rock music is truly provocative and rebellious on stage.
Lighting
Rock music video presents a dark, mysterious lighting. In other cases lifting could be clear and bright. The main reason is to provide an atmosphere to conduct to the audience inner spiritual condition and emotional state. Lighting is also used to correspond to the music pace and temp. It also serves as a communication through the music video without words. Lightning could be used as an anchor to emphasize the main character in the scene or other detail, it also could lead the view through narrative. The rock genre uses the power of the light against the dark. In the music video “I am Creep” from Radio Head the lightning is used to emphasize the vocalist.
Actors
Actors usually play along with the song lyrics. They reflect emotions according to the song script, either rebellious and violent, or sad and sentimental. Most of the time the actors for rock music videos are musicians themselves. They might be the main characters as well. For instance in their songs My Chemical Romance like to involve storylines in their clips but perform every role by themselves.
Makeup
As rock music is a very experimental and brave music genre, musicians are not scared to use fascinating makeup and grim. Rock includes a lot of subcultures, and each music video could reflect on specific one. The popular style of rock makeup are dark shadows near the eyes, like in the “Green Day” video. However in the music video for The Killers song, most of the actors used white toner, pink blush, colored shadows, and lip gloss to relate for the specific style of their video: dramatic and comedic soap opera. The Twisted Sisters like to use exaggerated bright makeup in favor of their rock genre, and Mudvayne in song Dig used a severe and scary grim.
Props
The most usual props being used in music videos are musical instruments. Artists usually have tattoos or makeup, the outfits are usually all blacks including heavy boots, accessortries, and piercings. The style of outfits could be varied due to the style of the music. For example the style of the Limp Bizkit is much more rap looking compared to Black Veil Braids who are performing their music in emo and hardrock rock. The popular used props in rock music could be also cars, guns, the elements of explosions, rain for dramatic songs, a lot of usage of additional lighting. For creating a specific atmosphere there also smoke is used, for example to identify fire.
Setting
The usual scenes used for any type of rock music video could be: basement, garage, scene, street, the roof of a building. In short terms every place there the whole group and its performance could be shown. The modern rock uses normal settings to help the viewer connect with the content easily. However the Linkin Park “Crawling” used a premade sci fi setting to straighten the depressive meaning of the song. Moreover, setting sections may be plain, littered, full of graffiti on the walls. Some rock videos are going into the extreme creepines through using psychiatric institutions or other abandoned places. All in all the setting could be just a plain white background, like in SoaD song Toxicity, or Mudvayne song Dig.
Narrative
The most usual scenario for a rock music video is then the main artist performs the narrative as the rest of the band members sit along. In some cases the actors are playing the narrative act incorporating the lyrics and narrative of the song. Most artists choose to do it on their own, as usually their songs are a representation of themselves. The rock music artists choose differently to represent their narratives. Either realistic, hyper realistic, either through metaphors and images. For instance, the band “The Birthday Massacre” usually depicts their songs in imaginary, creepy, mysterious settings through metaphors and allegories rather than through straightforward actions and representations.
Camera and Sound
The hard and harsh loud bass, noisy guitars and screams are common for rock. Usually sound is being boosted by technologies to emphasize the conveying of emotions. The camera also often focused on performers, especially on the main colaist as he is the main “voice”. Camera could be fixed and showing the overall band playing the music, with intervals of close up shots of every member, or canted angle shots of the vocalist. As in Sunny Day Real Estate in the song “Seven” the whole video is made up from close up shots of each band member.
Editing
Usually editing incorporates the shooting of a band and included storyline. Instead of a storyline there could be any other related photos but the showing each member playing or singing from different sides and eagles is iconic for every rock genre.
